Topic: Campus Resources
Goal Statement: To prepare an activity that will allow my students to become familiar with the resources around campus, by giving a homework assignment that will allow students to physically visit a variety of different resources around campus.
Activities/Resources:
· Meet with my URI 101 instructor to discuss this assignment.
· Find a list of the resources on campus that URI provides.
· Create a handout with the list of resources and hand it out to all students in class, assigning it for homework.
· Go over homework in class, debriefing all the resources and their importance.
Evidence: I will have my Assignment sheet with list of resources that URI provides
The following evidence is an example of an activity done in my section of URI 101 where students were asked to explore and research some of the different resources on campus in order to become familiar with their temporary home.
As a URI 101 mentor, I am in the position of helping my students comfortably transition into college and I am there to assist them in whatever questions or concerns that may arise. I also have to be knowledgeable of my campus and be able to point my students out to different campus resources that can help my students. With my undeclared students, I greatly emphasized career services.
The purpose of this activity was to help my students become aware and familiar with some important resources that URI has. What I did was design a worksheet that was basically a take-home scavenger hunt. I included a few simple questions such as "my ID won't let me into the dining hall. Where do I get it fixed?" So my students had to complete the worksheet and uncover the mystery of which campus resource is the right answer for each scenario given. In class the next week, we went over the worksheet as a class and talked about each resource described and other services that are provided by each resource. By the end, my students had a better feel to the campus and where to go if they need anything.
What I learned from this activity is that when it come to my section of URI 101, the best way to keep my students active and participating is to give them assignments that require action. Whether it's this specific assignment or leading an icebreaker during class, I learned that my students will be more attentive when they are asked to speak and when they are discovering information that will be useful and helpful to them. When it comes to campus resources, my students were interested to know where they could get help writing a resume or where to pick up a package from mom. So I learned from all this that I need to keep having my activities and assignments in this sort of manner, as a mentor, to bring the best participation out of my students.
I included this evidence to show the assignment that I gave my students. I put in parentheses the answer to each question in the evidence, but I did not give the answer when I handed the sheets out to my students. From this experience I learned about effective educating styles.
